What is a Hair Transplant?

Before anything else, what really is a Hair Transplant procedure?

Well, Hair Transplant (or Hair restoration, Hair implants) is the replacement of the hair for Men and Women. This kind of procedure basically removes the healthy hair follicles from the healthy part of the scalp and spread it out or put it into the part where the balding or thinning of hair occurs.

Hair Transplants correct the pattern of baldness or what we call male-pattern baldness. It doesn’t just correct male-pattern baldness but also other types of hair loss.

The procedure usually takes a whole day to be performed and the patient should be under a local anesthesia and sedation.

But with some cases of Hair Loss that need a Hair Transplant, general anesthesia is needed for the procedure. Hair Transplant is performed in the doctor’s office together with his/her surgery assistants.

There are two methods that the doctor can choose from: the Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) or the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). The doctor will first clean your scalp and after that he/she will numb the back of your head with a medicine.

Follicular Unit Strip Surgery

Understanding-Hair-Transplant-04When your doctor will do the Follicular Unit Strip Surgery, the procedure goes like this: After cleaning your scalp and putting some medicine to numb your head, the surgeon removes a 6-10 inch strip of skin at the back of your head.

This will be so painful but luckily, you are numb because of the medicine injected to you.

The removed skin will be set aside first for later use then the surgeon will close your scalp by sewing it and the hair around it will cover and hide the sewed wound.

Next, the surgeon’s assistants will divide the removed strip of skin from the back of your head into 500 to 2000 tiny grafts.

Each graft has different numbers or count of hairs in it, other grafts only have one then other grafts have three or more.

The number/count and type of hair that you’ll get will depend on the type of hair you have, quality, color and the size of the area where you will be getting the transplant.

Follicular Unit Extraction

The second method of Hair Transplantation is the Follicular Unit Extraction; if you are undergoing this procedure the surgeon will first shave the back of your scalp to make it clean and for them to easily perform the procedure.

Understanding-Hair-Transplant-03After shaving the back of your scalp, the surgeon will remove the hair follicles one by one.

The existing hair on your scalp will cover the area while it heals with small dots.

After preparing the grafts, the surgeon will clean the scalp and numb the area where the hair transplant will be performed.

Using a scalpel or a needle, the surgeon will cut slits or holes at the scalp and he/she will delicately place the grafts on the holes one by one.

The surgeon will need some help from the team to plant the grafts. It usually takes 4-8 hours to be performed. You can go back at the doctor’s office if you want to thicken your hair more.

hair-transplant-costIt usually ranges from $4,000 to $15,000 depending on the type of Hair Transplant you want to be performed.

Also, the price of the transplant will be depending on the size of the area that will be planted on.

What to Expect after the Hair Transplant?

There are plenty of things that you should expect after Hair Transplant.

After the surgery, your scalp will be very tender, soft and super fragile. Did you experience touching the head of a 1 to 6 month-old baby? It is soft, isn’t it?

Understanding-Hair-TransplantThat will be the state of your scalp after undergoing Hair Transplant. Also, you will be super careful on moving around because you need to protect your super tender and fragile scalp from pain causing materials.

You may also need to take some pain relievers or medicine for several days because it will be so painful after the surgery.

I am telling you that even if you’re taking some pain medicines or stuff to prevent the pain, you will feel it no matter what but you can’t do anything but to bear the pain.

Tell yourself that the pain you’re experiencing will be gone very, very soon and it will be. The doctor will recommend that you should wear bandages for a day or two so that your tender scalp will be protected and so that the dirt and dusts will not go into the wounds.

Doctors will also prescribe antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drugs to prevent infections and other stuff that can worsen the case of your wounded scalp.

You may take antibiotics for several days until your wounds get better. Don’t worry if you have work that you need to do in the office or at home.

Some patients went on their work and have done well actually after 3-5 days after the surgery. So you don’t have to worry anything about going back to work and can’t do well and be fired. If you will follow the prescriptions, recommendations and all the tips of your doctor, you will be good to live your life again.

And you can go back to your normal and healthy routine that you’re used to. But always remember, even though you can go back to work you should make sure that you are safe and protected from things than can give your head some pain.

And I almost forgot, after some weeks (2 to 3 weeks) the planted hair will fall out but don’t worry because the new hair will grow until it covers the area on your scalp that lacks hair.

Most of the patients after their surgery saw the result of 60% growth after 6 to 9 months of carefully waiting. Do not worry about how long or how short you will wait for them to fully grow; they will grow just in time. Your doctor may prescribe you to take some medicine or hair growth boosters like Minoxidil (Rogaine) for you to grow your hair faster.
